The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Voting in the 'pick an ace pride flag' is getting down the wire. In this newest round, the top three flags from each category in the second round will be pitted against each other, with you all voting for your four favourites. If there is a clear, unanimous leader, that design will be declared the winner. If the results aren't quite so cut-and-dry, a fourth and final poll will follow to determine the overall victor. _{(For those of you who are confused why this is round three, there was a first round happened before most of the designs had been submitted --and before most ace communities had heard about the entire project-- which determined the flags that were included on the first voting sheet in the most recent poll.)}

As you may know, there was controversy surrounding the decision to post the first two polls exclusively on AVEN, but this has finally been corrected, and the third round is being hosted on the impartial third-party poll site SurveyMonkey.com. You do not need an AVEN account to vote this time. Additionally, the results will be hidden until the conclusion of the poll, which should help throw off any bias from peer pressure.

The poll will be open until 11:59 PM GMT (check your time zone), on Tuesday, August 10th (so Tuesday night, just before Wednesday begins), so vote while you can! And remember, you don't have to have an AVEN account to vote, so if you know any other asexuals who aren't on AVEN who you think might like to have a say, let them know about this.

It was picked! The lucky flag was A1, the one with black-grey-white-purple stripes descending in that order.

Not my first choice (I really prefer C2 far more) but it's a good one, and its design echoes the other orientationpride flags, so it's all good.

Yeah, it could have. It's beginning to grow on me, though (I think because it's no longer a threat to the winning prospects of my favorite flag

).

I liked the plain stripes designs a lot better, actually: we can add our own symbols to them instead of everyone being stuck with, say, the ace of spades (which, though I love it, is known as the card of death, an brings to mind a couple of not-so-positive similes), or the AVEN triangle, when not all aces are active there or even like it there. It's a common base, like the other pride flags.
